About Zen Kakejiku

At Zen Kakejiku, we share the quiet beauty of traditional Japanese hanging scrolls with contemporary interiors around the world.

Known in Japan as “Kakejiku,” hanging scrolls have been part of everyday Japanese life for centuries — displayed seasonally to reflect nature, celebrate special occasions, and bring a sense of calm and harmony into the home.

Originally introduced to Japan alongside Buddhism during the Asuka period, kakejiku were first used as sacred objects for worship before gradually evolving into an important form of artistic and interior expression within Japanese culture. Over time, they became central to the tokonoma alcove, where seasonal art, calligraphy, and flowers were displayed to welcome guests and reflect the changing atmosphere of daily life.

Today, we believe these traditions continue to hold meaning within modern spaces.

Our collection brings together carefully selected hanging scrolls inspired by Japanese craftsmanship, Zen aesthetics, seasonal beauty, and timeless symbolism — designed to live naturally within calm contemporary interiors.

Japanese Craftsmanship

Creating a kakejiku is a delicate process that combines painting, paper, textiles, and traditional mounting techniques refined over hundreds of years.

Each artwork begins with the original painting or calligraphy. The piece is then carefully backed with layers of Japanese washi paper to strengthen and preserve the work while maintaining flexibility for rolling and hanging.

Decorative fabrics and silk borders are selected to complement the artwork, while additional backing layers provide both stability and elegance. Finally, the hanging scroll is assembled by hand with wooden rollers, cords, and finishing details before undergoing final inspection.

Many of the techniques used today have remained fundamentally unchanged for generations, preserving a uniquely Japanese approach to craftsmanship centered around patience, balance, and quiet refinement.

Made to Order

Many of our hanging scrolls are individually prepared to order by skilled artisans in Japan.

Because each piece is carefully assembled through traditional mounting processes, additional production time may be required before international shipment.

Selected works are also available as part of our Ready to Ship collection for immediate dispatch from Japan.

Why We Preserve This Tradition

In modern life, spaces are often filled with noise, speed, and excess.

Kakejiku offer something different — a moment of stillness.

For centuries in Japan, hanging scrolls have been used not only as decoration, but as a way to reflect the seasons, express quiet thoughts, and create atmosphere within a space.

At Zen Kakejiku, we hope to preserve this tradition by introducing hanging scrolls in a way that feels natural within contemporary interiors around the world.

Not simply as traditional objects, but as timeless pieces that bring calmness, meaning, and quiet beauty into everyday living.
